A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast, and the most effective diagnostic tool available to detect breast cancer before signs or symptoms appear. Leading cancer organizations, including the American Cancer Society, recommend screening mammograms every year beginning at age 40. Many insurances cover the cost of this important test for diagnosing breast cancer in its early stages when treatment is most successful.
