Garden City Hospital Hosts Sharps Drive on Tuesday, July 16 to Prevent Contamination and Environmental Impact

Garden City, MI – July 2, 2019 Garden City Hospital is hosting a Sharps Collection Event on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at 6245 Inkster Rd, Garden City, MI 48135.

The Sharps Collection event is a collaborative effort between Garden City Hospital Diabetes Education and housekeeping to provide a safe, responsible place to dispose of sharps. Sharps include used and unused needles, syringes, and lancets. According to the World Health Organization, every year an estimated 16 billion self-injections are administered worldwide, but not all needles and syringes are properly disposed of afterward. When sharps are improperly disposed of it can lead to contamination of the environment or injury and illness. The World Health Organization reports a person who experiences one needle stick injury from a needle used on an infected source patient has risks of 30%, 1.8%, and 0.3% respectively of becoming infected with HBV, HCV and HIV. Proper disposal is the best way to prevent these diseases and more from spreading.

“This event is designed to not only help people but the environment as well,” said Saju George, CEO, Garden City Hospital and Regional CEO Prime Healthcare MI Market. “Protecting the well-being of our community is our number one priority. With this event, we can help people continue to administer the medication they need while minimizing contamination and health risks, as well as our environmental footstep.”

To participate, drop off used or unused sharps at Garden City Hospital, on Elmwood St, past the ER entrance on Tuesday, July 16 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Please make sure all sharps are sealed in a puncture-proof container, such as an empty bleach or laundry detergent bottle, or sharps disposal container. All sharps delivered unenclosed will not be accepted. For more information, please call 734-458-4240.
