About the Program

Residency Overview

This three-year program provides a broad clinical experience to general and subspecialty Internal Medicine within a community hospital setting. Residents may tailor their curriculum to prepare them for primary care IM or subspecialty residency training; outside electives are also available. ICU/IM call is scheduled on a tiered system.

Garden City Hospital offers fellowship training in the following subspecialties.

Program Director

Ron J. Kattoo, MD

Dr. Kattoo

Dr. Kattoo is a graduate of Wayne State Univ. School of Medicine (Michigan). He completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital (Michigan), followed by fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine also at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Kattoo has received numerous recognitions, including ICU Teaching Staff of the Year, Fellow Teaching Staff of the Year and Teaching Staff of the Year. The Internal Medicine Residency at Garden City Hospital is a Fully Accredited ACGME Program.

Associate Program Director

Sujata Kambhatla, MD

Dr. Kambhatla is a graduate of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Ajmer, India. She completed her internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University. Dr. Kambhatla is board certified in Internal Medicine and has been a member of our teaching faculty for Internal Medicine since 2000.

Dr. Kambhatla is Chief of Staff at Garden City Hospital and the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program.

IM Program Requirement by PGY Level

PGY-1
  • 18 Weeks General Internal Medicine
  • 4 Weeks ICU/Critical Care Medicine
  • 4 Weeks Cardiology
  • 4 Weeks Neurology
  • 4 Weeks Emergency Medicine
  • 4 Weeks Infectious Diseases
  • 6 Weeks IM Night House Float -scheduled during first 6 months of PGY-1
8 Weeks Selectives:
  • General IM
  • ICU
  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Hematology-Oncology
  • Nephrology
  • Radiology
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Urology

NO MOONLIGHTING

PGY-2 and PGY 3
  • Between 8 and 16 months General Internal Medicine
At least 1 month in each of following Subspecialties (9 Weeks)
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology/Oncology (combined or separate)
  • Infectious Disease
  • Nephrology
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology
  • ​Critical Care Medicine/ICU

Ambulatory training incorporated through continuity clinic as well as office based exposure on subspecialty rotations

MOONLIGHTING -- Requires permission of Program Director and compliance with ALL policies and procedures

Ambulatory Clinic

18 months ---- PGY-1 and half of PGY-2 with one preceptor
