About the Program

Residency Overview

The Emergency Medicine Residency at Garden City Hospital was established in 1985. We are dedicated to providing quality clinical and didactic education to residents.

The program includes: organized weekly didactics Wednesday mornings, grand rounds, case reviews, M&M conference, and Tintanelli textbook review. Residents assume progressive responsibility in the Emergency Department during their three years. Required out-rotations in pediatrics and toxicology are available locally; time is allotted for outside electives as well.

Program Director

Hao Nguyen, DO

Dr. Nguyen

Dr. Nguyen is a graduate of the Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed internship and residency training at Henry Ford Warren Hospital. He is dual board-certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine and in Internal Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Curriculum

PGY-1

  • 8 months of Emergency Medicine
  • 1 month of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (Children’s Hospital of Michigan)
  • 1 month of Critical Care Medicine
  • 1 month of Internal Medicine - Night House Float
  • 2 weeks of Cardiology
  • 2 weeks of Neurology

PGY-2

  • 7 months of Emergency Medicine
  • 1 month of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (Children’s Hospital of Michigan)
  • 1 month of Surgical Critical Care (SICU) (Sinai-Grace Hospital)
  • 1 month of Trauma (R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center)
  • 1 month of Pediatric Critical Care (PICU) (Hurley Medical Center)
  • 2 weeks of Cardiology
  • 2 weeks of Neurology

PGY-3

  • 8 months of Emergency Medicine
  • 1 month of Emergency Medicine Foundations
  • 1 month of Critical Care Medicine
  • 1 month of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), including:
    • EMS ride alongs
    • Emergency Preparedness
    • Disaster Management
  • 1 month of Toxicology
