What is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure used to look inside the body with an endoscope, a thin, flexible tool with a camera and light attached to it. Endoscopy allows doctors to look for inflammation, tumors, infection and bleeding often revealing problems that do not show up on x-rays and often eliminating the need for exploratory surgery. Endoscopic procedures are performed with I.V. sedation.

Doctors will often recommend endoscopy to evaluate or diagnose:

  • Constipation and Fecal Incontinence
  • Hiatal Hernia
  • Diseases of the Pancreas, including Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis, Hereditary Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer and Pancreatic Cysts
  • Esophageal Bleeding, Cancer, or Strictures
  • Colon Cancer
  • Gastrointestinal Ulcers and Bleeding
  • Heartburn and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS), Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis
