HEALTHGRADES NAMES GARDEN CITY HOSPITAL A FIVE-STAR RECIPIENT FOR HIP FRACTURE TREATMENT, PACEMAKER PROCEDURES, COLORECTAL SURGERIES, AND GALLBLADDER SURGERIES

10-23-2017

Garden City, Michigan (October 19, 2017) – Garden City Hospital today announced that it has achieved 5 stars for its performance in hip fracture treatment, pacemaker procedures, colorectal surgeries, and gallbladder surgeries from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This achievement is part of new findings and data released today by Healthgrades and featured in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. *

The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2014-2016, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars as a group, on average 219,568 lives could potentially have been saved and 164,454 complications could potentially have been avoided.** A 5-star rating indicates that Garden City Hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

“As a community hospital, we examine health needs of our population. Our community is diverse in many ways, including age. Our senior population is growing faster than any other segment of the population. As we age, our need for healthcare services changes and intensifies. We want to make sure that we stand ready to provide individualized care to our diverse population,” said Saju George, CEO of Garden City Hospital.

“We have expanded our Cardiology and Emergency Departments, streamlined our surgery center and created partnerships that make sense to keep moving Garden City Hospital forward,” said George. “An investment in GCH is an investment in the future of our communities, and we are committed to the growth of both. A healthy community is at the heart of our mission to provide quality services at a value to our patients.”

In addition to these five-star quality achievements, Garden City Hospital continues to be in the top 5% of hospitals nationally and has received the coveted Patient Safety Excellence Award for multiple years in a row.

Healthgrades quote: “In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving high-quality outcomes is fundamental,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Because consumers place such value on this information, hospitals that achieve five stars for hip fracture treatment, pacemaker procedures, colorectal surgeries, and gallbladder surgeries stand out in their marketplace.”

*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
