Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Stimulates Healing
"Hyperbaric: Using pressure and oxygen to heal wounds."
The Garden City Hospital Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Services at the Specialty Centers of Westland offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for patients with wounds that have not responded to other treatment. Many wounds fail to heal because the supply of oxygen received by the damaged tissues is too low for the body to repair itself. HBOT supplies the oxygen the body needs to stimulate and support healing. A series of treatments using the Center’s hyperbaric oxygen chamber increases the level of oxygen the tissues receive, promoting wound healing and the body’s own ability to repair itself.
Who is a Candidate for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is commonly used in the treatment of:
Diabetic foot wounds
Chronic bone infections (osteomyelitis)
Compromised skin grafts and flaps
Radiation damage to soft tissue, bone, bowel, bladder and prostate
What is a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) session like?
Each treatment session in the chamber lasts approximately two hours, with patients breathing 100 percent oxygen at 2 to 3 times normal atmospheric pressure. The Center’s multi-person chamber accommodates up to eight patients sitting comfortably. The space is similar to what you would experience in the first-class cabin of an airplane, with room to stand and walk around. The second largest chamber in the state, it measures 8 feet in diameter and 24 feet in length and includes a bathroom.
Patients enjoy personal TV monitors, napping, or reading during treatment.
In addition, the Center offers single-person hyperbaric chambers, which extend the treatment options available to patients. The patient lies comfortably in this clear acrylic vessel during their treatment.
Both chambers are monitored closely by certified hyperbaric physicians and technologists. For hyperbaric oxygen therapy to be effective patients need to commit to treatment every weekday for up to six weeks.
