Date: Tuesday, March 01, 2011 - 12:00 AM

Flu prevention is crucial when you are trying to stay healthy — especially during flu season. Common sense tells us that flu prevention should be as easy as 1-2-3. So how can you prevent the flu? Read on for some great flu prevention tips for 2011.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes. Germs spread this way.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or cough and sneeze into your elbow. Dispose of tissues in no-touch trash receptacles.
  • Keep frequently touched common surfaces clean, such as telephones, tables, computer keyboards and doorknobs.
  • Do not use other peoples' phones, desks, offices, or other items or equipment if possible. If you need to use someone else's phone or other equipment, clean it first.
  • Don’t spread the flu! If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home.
  • Get vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Preventiong (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle with rest, diet and exercise.
